The Mayan cities, full of magnificent stone temples and pyramids, were primarily ceremonial centers. It fell into rapid decline around , and was abandoned around at the time of Spanish colonization. The Temple of the Murals, which once received offerings from pilgrims to the site, is named for brightly colored, geometric patterns still visible on the walls. The Mayans were an agrarian society, but also mastered astronomy, calendar-making, and mathematics. So if you want to be able to climb Mayan ruins, I definitely recommend Ek Balam.
